Wedding planning can be a huge stressor. It’s the most important day of your life, and it involves hundreds of people and they’re coming from all over and everything has to be just perfect and . . . you know what we’re talking about, because you’re there, right now.
Some wedding stress can’t be avoided, but you can definitely keep it from reaching volcanic levels by following a few simple tips.
John Milton wrote, “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” And it’s true. Stress is in your mind, and that’s where you need to start taking control of your stress. By focusing on the positive, you will be a long way toward eliminating stress from wedding planning.
You probably can’t have everything exactly the way you want it. Stressing over the small stuff is going to cause you lots of unnecessary grief. Figure out what matters most to you and focus on that, letting everything else go if it can’t be just the way you want it.
You’re just one person (or, if you’re planning with your beloved, 2), and there’s just so much to do. Delegating some of the tasks to others will help you cut down on the overwhelming burden you are facing. Keep the most important tasks for yourself, and delegate some of the things that don’t matter as much to you. Or delegate some of the ground work—there’s a lot of options that can be eliminated out of hand—give someone the work of sifting out the obvious losers and giving you a smaller list of options to choose from.
It’s easy to lose yourself in wedding planning, and forget to do the basics of keeping yourself alive. First of all, sleep. Getting too little sleep will reduce your reserves for dealing with stress. Next, eat. We know you’re trying to lose weight to fit in your dress, but don’t pick one that’s beyond the realistic range for you. A healthy diet is crucial to helping you control your stress. Besides, the last thing you should do is exercise. Exercise not only helps you burn off calories, it releases hormones that help manage your stress. You will feel better if you keep doing your daily jog.
Remember why you’re doing this? Because you’re in love, right? Your beloved is a source of joy and rejuvenation for you. When you’re feeling really low, take some time with them and recharge your batteries. You’d be amazed at how much better you’ll feel just from taking a few hours just for love.
We know that you’re a giving person and that upholding your commitments is important to you, but you have to acknowledge that wedding planning takes a lot of energy and you may not be able to do everything that you used to do. Some of your volunteer activities or extra duties at work may have to be reduced temporarily. People should understand.
In addition to the stresses of wedding planning, there are also great opportunities for enjoying yourself. Of course there’s the bachelor/bachelorette parties, but there are also other opportunities to enjoy yourself. Doing taste tests on cake or caterers can be a great occasion for an impromptu party. Celebrate and enjoy these opportunities and you’ll find your stress melts away.
