7 Unique Wedding Ideas

Are you looking for a simple way to make your wedding a unique experience like nothing anyone has attended? Try riffing off a few of these ideas to make your wedding something special.

Crazy Confetti

Confetti has taken over from rice for throwing at couples as they leave the ceremony, and it leaves lots of room for people to get creative.

You can use a glitter confetti, small balls, beach balls, or dozens of other special selections to make your wedding unique. You can even have a confetti bar that lets guests build their own concoctions to throw. Silly string has been used by some people, but check to make sure your wedding venue allows it—it can be hard to clean up.

Invitations That Let People Make Requests

Want to crowdsource some of your wedding planning? Let people vote on different aspects of the ceremony or reception? One of the easiest things to crowdsource is the music list, but you can also survey people about menu options, cake flavors, and more. Just make sure the RSVP date is far enough in advance to let vendors know what you’re going to need.

Wedding Games

Dancing is a standard activity at wedding receptions, but not everybody loves to dance. Some people might rather play games. The type of games you play depends on you, but you can choose ones that you like, from piñatas to washers to flip cup. Pick something that you know your friends will enjoy, and set up for some raucous fun.

You can also use wedding games at the table such as Mad Libs or crosswords to give guests things to do while they’re waiting and good conversation starters if they’re sitting next to people they don’t know.

Reclaimed Décor

Want to get something truly unique? Go out and find it, then give it your personal touch. Estate sales, flea markets, and junkyards all make great places to look for something unlike anyone has ever seen. Work on the décor as a couple to make it even more special for your wedding.

Dim Sum Dinner (or Dessert)

Dim Sum is kind of like an anti-buffet. Instead of having people go to the food line, the food comes around to the tables in carts. People pick the options they want from the carts, then get their cards stamped to make sure they’re getting a full meal (but not too much). It’s traditionally used with Vietnamese food, but can be adapted to any cuisine, and can be used for either dinner or dessert (see below).

Break Away from Cake

Wedding cake is a very traditional fixture at every wedding, but it doesn’t have to be at yours. You can take a different tack. A wedding cheesecake is a great alternative, but you could also do wedding cookies, fruit platters, or even huge cheese wheels.

Time Capsules

Another great idea is to make a special keepsake of your wedding that you plan to open at your first, fifth, or tenth anniversary. Seal up love letters or other memorabilia from your relationship, or ask every wedding guest to contribute something to the time capsule. Seal it during the ceremony or reception.
