Specific Expectations

Groomsmen have some duties they are almost always expected to perform. These include:

• Pay for your wedding attire

• Attend all the festivities before the wedding ceremony, such as the rehearsal and dinner, as well as the ceremony.

• Escort a bridesmaid down the aisle

• Help plan and attend the bachelor party

• Decorate the “getaway car” from the departure of the couple. You may be expected to act as chauffer

• Give a wedding present

If you can’t commit to the above, it’s probably best to bow out.

Additional Expectations

Sometimes, groomsmen are given additional duties. These may include:

• Acting as usher at the wedding

• Tell wedding guests about the ceremony (such as when it starts, how long it’ll take), and reception. If it’s not being held at the same wedding venue as the ceremony, you may be asked to give directions to the reception.

• Picking up guests at the airport or shuttling them around town.

• Dancing with a bridesmaid or unaccompanied female guests at the reception.

You might want to ask about these duties beforehand and make it clear whether you’d be willing to do them or not. If you don’t, you risk getting roped in at the last minute or causing a row when you refuse.
