There is no such thing as an engagement that’s too long, if you are both happy with how long it’s taking. However long you want your engagement to be, that’s the right length for you. An engagement is a promise to get married, just like a marriage is a promise to stay together, and if you can’t handle a long engagement, how could you handle a long marriage?
But if only one of you is advocating for a long engagement, there may be trouble brewing.
There are many reasons why people might want a long engagement. Perhaps you are both in school and want to get finished before getting married. Or maybe you want to save up money for the perfect wedding. And speaking of the perfect wedding, wouldn’t it be cool to get married under the total eclipse in Buenos Aires in July 2019?
You get the idea. There are good reasons why you might want to put off your wedding to make it better for both of you. There’s a perfect wedding plan that you both want that can best be achieved if you wait a while.
On the other hand, there are bad reasons for a long engagement. The main one is that one of you just isn’t ready to commit. At the time of the engagement, you should be thoroughly committed to one another. If you aren’t you’re not ready to make a promise of marriage.
Another bad reason for a long engagement is that your family thinks you’re too young. Once you’re old enough to get married legally, you’re old enough to stop letting parents dictate when you do the things you want to do. And that goes for friends, too.
And a long engagement has its benefits. First of all, you will get to pick the perfect wedding venue, because few of them will be booked up at this point. You also have first pick of the vendors (though you should be prepared if not all of them have their calendars ready at this point). Best of all, you can take time to enjoy being engaged without having the crush of wedding planning on you right away. And when you do start planning, you can take your time and get it right.
