When should you get married? Is it better to get married younger in life or older in life? Last year, Julia Shaw touched off a firestone of controversy with her article encouraging young people of her generation to get married at a younger age. There was, of course, a backlash against her, and then a reasoned Washington Post piece that laid down the numbers.
But you don’t have to read all that to understand the debate, because we’re going to lay out the basic benefits.
There are some definite benefits to getting married young. One of the biggest ones is that people who marry in their mid-20s tend to be the happiest in their marriage. Nearly two-thirds of women who marry at this age rate their marriage as “very happy,” compared to only 42% of those that marry over the age of 30, and although women who marry over 30 have the lowest divorce rate, they also have the highest rate of describing their marriage as “not very happy,” which means that women of this age may not have good marriages, they’re just more committed to enduring them.
Younger married couples also tend to have more sex than older married couples. For every four years you wait to get married, you are likely to have sex one time less per month.
We already touched on one of the benefits of getting married later: a significantly lower divorce rate. The other benefit is that women who get married older tend to have a higher income. This is because they have spent more time developing their own careers and not relying on their husbands to make money or prioritizing the marriage over career.
If you are considering getting married, there is a right time for you to get married. Whether you are young now or old now, you will know whether it’s the right time to get married. Statistics and odds are sports and dice games—they won’t tell you about love. Love is about heart and it’s about feelings. That time depends on when you find the right person for you to marry and when it feels right to do it.
