Deciding whether to hire a wedding planner is important, and it’s a decision you should make sooner rather than later, and especially before you make big decisions like major vendors or the wedding venue. The sooner you get them on the job, the more your benefit, and the more it’ll be worth the fee.
There are many good reasons not to hire a wedding planner. The one that jumps to everyone’s mind is the money. Wedding planners can be expensive, if they’re talented and experienced. It’s also possible that if you don’t make your expense parameters clear, your wedding planner may make things more expensive (though it’s often the opposite, see below!)
Another reason why you might not want to hire a wedding planner is that they do take some things out of your hands. You may not feel as much in control of your wedding, and, if you’re a person who really likes to do it yourself (or do it with your family or your spouse), then a wedding planner might not be right for you.
Another potential problem is that if you don’t hire your wedding planner with care, they may not put in the requisite time to get everything done right. You may have wished you did it yourself.
Wedding planners do bring a lot to the table, though, and for many people this makes them worth the money. Probably the biggest area where wedding planners can actually save you money is with hiring vendors. Wedding planners have a very good idea of what things should cost, and they have the clout to make a hard bargain. Often vendors may give a great deal to a wedding planner because they want to gain that planner’s future business.
Another benefit of hiring a wedding planner is that they, ideally, should be dedicated to making sure your wedding goes right. They should be putting in the effort, making the calls, including doing all the reminder calls to vendors as the event approaches, which you might forget. Having a wedding planner frees you up to focus on your special event and the things that only you can do, such as meeting with family and spending time with the wedding party.
Another good thing about a wedding planner is that they are a lot freer to act the bad guy with unruly or demanding guests that start drama. It may be your Aunt Ethel, your late mother’s dearest sister, but to the wedding planner it’s just another person trying to disrupt a wedding that should be perfect. They can say what needs to be said, and do what needs to be done. Then you can plead ignorance (even if you told them what to do) after the fact, apologize to the family member, and not have to start your married life trying to work your way out of wedding guilt purgatory.
There are significant benefits either way. Which one you choose will depend on what values are most important to you for your wedding. At Stonebrook Manor, we can help you decide. Please contact us today for a tour of our venue in North Denver.
