Choose Catered Food to Match Your Wedding Theme
Many couples like to have a theme for their wedding. This theme is a unifying element that ties together everything from the wedding colors to the decorations to the food at the reception. In most of these, it’s important to please yourself above all others. After all, this is your day.
But when you’re picking food for the reception, it’s important to be sensitive to your guests above all if you want them to enjoy your wedding and bring their energy to the party. Besides, if your wedding is anything like mine or the dozens of others I’ve been to, you won’t be eating much at the reception—you’ll be too busy!
Here are some tips for getting great catered wedding food for your guests that also matches your theme.
A Little Goes a Long Way
Resist the temptation to make every food themed. Instead, select three to six themed dishes for a buffet or one or two for a plated meal that evoke the theme without overpowering the taste buds of your guests. For example, a buffet for a Hawaiian themed wedding might include a tropical fruit selection, coconut or macadamia nut encrusted shrimp, and Hawaiian roast pork. A plated dinner for a spring theme might include pasta primavera and fresh spring salad.
Think Ingredients, Not Recipes
Another important strategy is to tie in theme ingredients rather than themed recipes. Ingredients can carry the theme while being incorporated into mainstream or family favorite recipes that your guests are more likely to enjoy. This also helps you to keep from going overboard with your theme.
Give Choices
Whenever you’re offering an exotic dish at your wedding, you need to give an alternative that allows guests to opt for foods they are more likely to enjoy. If people feel they have the choice to explore your theme, they’re more likely to enjoy the wedding, but if you force them to participate they can get irritated and surly. You may not hear about it the day of your wedding, but expect to hear about it for years after!
