Bridesmaids have several duties in a modern wedding party, though, fortunately they no longer have to dress up like the bride and risk being attack by evil spirits like they did during Roman days. Instead, their duties are much more straightforward and less harrowing.
The maid or matron of honor is closest to the bride and appropriately has the most responsibilities out of any member of the bridal party. The maid of honor has to be in charge of the bridesmaids and coordinate their activities, including planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party.
The maid of honor also has to take responsibility for helping the bride get to the dressing place on time, and helping her get dressed. She helps with all the little details and does the final check to make sure everything is adjusted properly. She may be called upon to perform any urgent tasks the bride can’t handle on the day of the wedding, and she signs the marriage license as the bride’s witness.
She is also responsible for all the duties of the bridesmaids.
Probably the biggest obligation on a bridesmaid is to achieve the look the bride wants for her party on the day of the wedding. The biggest expense is buying the dress the bride has picked out for you, but there may be others, such as paying to have your hair or makeup done. You may also have to purchase shoes, jewelry or accessories.
Hopefully, the bride is reasonable and is prepared to compromise on some of these to help make them affordable.
Bridesmaids are expected to attend all pre-wedding parties thrown by the bride or the maid of honor, though out-of-town bridesmaids may be excused.
Not only that, but at the reception, bridesmaids may be expected to do things to help the party run smoothly. This may range from helping people find where they’re supposed to be to monitoring the buffet line to getting people out on the floor to dance.
Hopefully, though, if you are truly friends with the bride, these duties should actually feel not so much like an obligation as an opportunity to help your friend enjoy her special day.
