Sound Her Out

The most important thing about a proposal is that it delights her. You want her to feel what a wonderful thing this is and have a happy, shining emotional glow when the moment unfolds, not be irritated or embarrassed. To make sure you get the right response, you need to talk to her about things in a cagey fashion, such as how she feels about details of the proposal. You want to make sure that if you’re doing a public proposal, she’s going to think it’s beautiful and romantic, and not stressful or scary. If you’re thinking about using a location that you think is special, you might try to find out if she remembers it as fondly as you do.

Enlist Trustworthy Confidants

One of the best ways to find out how she feels about things without arousing suspicion is to have a friend ask her questions incidentally or bring things up. Maybe a friend might have everyone talk about the first time they kissed their boyfriends at a girl’s night out to determine if that’s something that your girlfriend remembers well.

And any large proposal is going to depend on lots of people working together. All these people will need to be able to keep it mum.

Scout the Locale

Always make sure you know the details about the place you are considering proposing. Don’t rely on memories about what the restaurant where you had your first date was like—your memory may be faulty or it could’ve change.

Handle Logistics

If you’re going to propose in a public place and want cooperation from staff and/or management, make sure you find out beforehand what you have to do to get their involvement (at a minimum, expect to leave a generous tip!). If you are wanting to do something like a paddleboat, gondola, or horse-and-carriage, check to see if you can reserve one. You might be able to get some surprising extras that can help perfect the moment if you just ask.
