One thing that can strike fear in the hearts of many people is the thought that they may have to write something. It brings up memories of college or high school where they sat staring at a blank screen trying desperately to come up with ideas to throw down before their paper was due tomorrow.
But if this is you, fear not because you are not required to write your own vows for your wedding. In fact, sometimes you may not be allowed to write your own vows. Sometimes your church may require that you speak vows according to those that have official standing in the sacrament.
For many types of services, you will be speaking traditional vows. These vows may have meaning to your family, faith, or community. Your parents might want you to speak the same vows they did, or your priest may have vows that they believe are important to speak. You may get to choose one of many options, or they may be determined.
For traditional vows, all you have to do is repeat back what the officiant says to you. It’s easy, and that can be a good thing for your wedding day when you have enough to stress about.
Other times, it may be very important to one or both parties that the vows be personal and customized. In this case, too, there really isn’t that much to panic about. Take a look at these sample vows and pick the best ideas you like. Then add a few personal touches.
Depending on how you want to do things, this may be just as easy on the day of the wedding. You can give your personalized vows to the officiant who will read them back to you so you can speak them during the ceremony. Other times your partner may want to speak them more personally to one another. You don’t have to memorize them—you can read them if it makes you more comfortable.
